It's been a while that we hear Sega will release a proper version of its iconic 16-BIT console. So when we saw the news a couple days ago, we got super excited.Ā

At Sega Fes 2019,Ā Sega announcedĀ that it will finally release a retro version of its Sega Genesis console later this year: the SegaĀ Genesis MiniĀ (in the US) and theĀ Mega Drive Mini (in Japan). The device will come with 40 built-in games, and will hit stores on September 19th, 2019.

According toĀ Kotaku, the Genesis Mini / Mega Drive will have slightly different game lineups when released.Ā

The Japanese version will includeĀ Castlevania Bloodlines, Comix Zone, Gunstar Heroes, Madou Monogatari Ichi, Powerball, Puyo Puyo 2, Rent-a-Hero, Shining Force, Sonic 2,Ā andĀ Space Harrier II,Ā while the US version will includeĀ Altered Beast, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Comix Zone, Dr. Robotnikā€™s Mean Bean Machine, Ecco the Dolphin, Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force, Sonic The Hedgehog, Space Harrier II,Ā andĀ ToeJam & Earl. Additional games will be announced.

There are some other minor differences: the Genesis Mini will come with a pair of three-button USB controllers and will retail for $79.99, while the Japanese Mega Drive Mini will come with a six-button controller, and will sell for Ā„6,980 ($60), or with an additional controller for Ā„8,980 yen ($80). The Sega says that pre-order links are coming soon.

Thereā€™s been a booming market for nostalgic consoles in recent years. In 2016, Nintendo released theĀ NES ClassicĀ and followed up with theĀ SNES Classic a year later, although both have sinceĀ left production. Sony followed with its own version, theĀ PlayStation Classic last year. The miniature consoles plug into a modern television and allow gamers to play right off the bat.

Ā

Unlike the Nintendo consoles, the Sega Genesis Mini will feature opening cartridge doors, and will feature standard USB ports for the controllers.

This isnā€™t Segaā€™s first attempt in the retro gaming market. Itā€™sĀ licensed its name out to emulator console before to companies like AtGames, although it has had aĀ mixed track record with quality. The companyĀ originally announced the Mega Drive Mini a year agoĀ to coincide with the original deviceā€™s 30th anniversary. But late in 2018, the company announced that it wasĀ delaying that release, seemingly over the quality issues that plagued the earlier consoles. At Sega Fes, the company revealed that developer M2 will replace AtGames to produce the games for the device.

We are proud to announce that you will be able to get the console on DAY 1, on RETROPIXL.com

Ā

We will keep you updated soon aboutĀ  reservations, so stay tuned!

PS: The US version has a 3-button controller, and the device will feature movable parts and standard USB ports.
