The PC Engine has an 8-bitĀ CPU, a 16-bit video color encoder, and a 16-bitĀ video display controller.

TheĀ GPUsĀ are capable of displaying 482 colors simultaneously, out of 512. With dimensions of 14Ā cmƗ14Ā cmƗ3.8Ā cm (5.5 inƗ5.5 inƗ1.5 in), the PC Engine once held the record for the world's smallest game console.

The PC Engine uses HU Cards for games, which makes it very different from the usual cartridges and CDs later on.
