TheĀ sixth-generation consoleĀ is the successor to theĀ Nintendo 64Ā and competed withĀ Sony Computer Entertainment'sĀ PlayStation 2Ā andĀ Microsoft'sĀ Xbox.

The GameCube is the first Nintendo console to useĀ optical discsĀ as its primary storage medium. The discs are similar to theĀ miniDVDĀ format; as a result of their smaller size and the console's small disc compartment, the system was not designed to play standardĀ DVDsĀ orĀ audio CDs.

The console supportsĀ online gamingĀ for a small number of its titles via theĀ broadband or modem adapterĀ and connects to theĀ Game Boy AdvanceĀ via theĀ link cable, allowing players to access exclusive in-game features using the handheld as a second screen and controller.

The console was praised for its controller, extensive software library and high-quality games. The GameCube was discontinued in 2007.
